Even though this represented a massive amount of firepower and armor, especially when compared with the monitors in use at the time, she was outdated by the time she was commissioned. She also boasted armor a foot thick around her turrets and gun deck and nine inches of armor around the conning tower. Her main armor belt consisted of twelve inches of Harvey armor. It is also interesting to note that she was fitted with a ram bow. She was also armed with six 6-inch guns, four QF 6 pounders, four 37mm Hotchkiss five-barrel revolving guns, six Driggs-Schroeder guns and four 14-inch torpedo tubes. At maximum range, the AP shell could defeat armor just over 9 inches thick. These guns were able to fire an 870 pound shell in either AP or common about 12,000 yards when elevated to 15 degrees. Her main armaments consisted of two 12 inch 35 caliber guns. Here is a good view of the USS Texas in drydock, date unknown. She represented a huge step forward for the American navy, along with her near sister (not to mention more famous) the USS Maine. She was launched on Jand finally commissioned on August 15, 1895.
